Toupees for Men, Fitted in Huntington Beach
Toupee, hairpiece or hair system: three names for one thing. Here’s what a modern one is, what it costs and how it’s fitted.

Toupees for men in Orange County
Hair System Salons fits toupees for men at one salon in Orange County: 19016 Brookhurst Street, Huntington Beach.
We call them hair systems. Many people still say toupee, and both words describe the same hairpiece.
A modern toupee is usually human hair on a thin base, attached with tape or glue and cut and blended with your own hair. A unit from our online store costs $169–$379. Fitting is $250 for about 2 hours, and the 30-minute consultation is free; if your toupee is ready, the fitting can follow the same day.
On the booking page, choose “Free Consultation”. See all prices.
What is a toupee? Today it’s called a hair system
A hairpiece for the top of the head, blended into the hair at the sides and back
A toupee is a hairpiece that covers the top of the head where hair has thinned or gone, blended into the hair still growing at the sides and back. Salons now usually call it a hair system: human hair attached to a thin base, bonded to the scalp and cut to match.
The names change with habit and country, not with the product
- Toupee
- The older word, and still widely searched.
- Hairpiece
- The plain-language word.
- Hair system
- The trade’s word now, and ours.
- Hair patch
- The everyday word in India and across South Asia. See hair patch.

The old toupee image, and what has changed
The base, the hair and the attachment have all changed. The need for upkeep has not
The toupee most people picture, a heavy piece sitting on top of the hair, is not what we fit today.
| Older toupees (typical) | A modern toupee | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Thick and heavy, with edges that show | Thin lace, thin skin (polyurethane) or monofilament |
| Hair | Often synthetic, one flat color | Usually human hair (every unit in our store is), matched to your own; the salon can color the unit and your hair together |
| Attachment | Clips or combs, on in the morning, off at night | Bonded to the scalp with tape or glue, worn day and night between services |
| Cut | Bought pre-styled and set on top | Cut and blended with your own hair at the fitting |
What hasn’t changed
- It needs regular servicing, and it wears out and gets replaced.
- It doesn’t grow. Your own hair at the sides does, so the blend changes between visits.
- Up close and to the touch, the edge isn’t your own scalp.
Will it blow off in the wind?
A toupee bonded with tape or glue is held along its base rather than clipped at a few points, so it is far less likely to lift in the wind than the cartoon version. What loosens a bond is time, sweat and skin oil. Edges can start to lift late in the weeks between services, which is what servicing is for.
Will people know?
What gives one away is usually specific: a hairline that’s too dense or too straight, shine, color that doesn’t match (grey especially), or a worn-out unit. Most have a fix; see what makes a hairpiece look real.
What a men’s toupee is made of
Two parts: the hair, and the base it’s attached to

Every unit in our online store uses human hair, on one of three base types. Lace front isn’t a fourth base: 5 of the 30 units add a lace hairline to their main base.
Ready-made or custom?
Every toupee in our online store is a ready-made unit. It ships to you instead of being built to order, and you can see and handle it before anything is cut. What a ready-made unit can’t do is copy an unusual head shape or a very specific density exactly; that’s what a custom order is for. Not sure which you need? Bring the question to the free consultation.
| Base | How it feels and looks | In our store |
|---|---|---|
| Lace (Swiss or French) | Open mesh, the most breathable; a soft, natural-looking front; more delicate | 13 units, $229–$379 |
| Thin skin (polyurethane) | A skin-like film with a clean edge; adhesive cleans off easily; warmer on hot days | 12 units, $169–$369 |
| Monofilament (mono) | A fine, durable mesh that holds its shape | 5 units, $209–$329 |
Most units are 8″ × 10″ and are cut down to the shape of the area at the fitting. 2 use Remy hair. For smaller areas, the store has a hairline piece, the Men's Frontal Hair System ($169), and a 5″ × 5″ crown piece, the Poly Thin Skin V-looped Top Hairpiece ($179).
Choosing a base comes down to sweat, styling and how often you want servicing: see lace vs thin skin.

A worked example
The Transparent Poly Skin Men’s Toupee is $239. With the $250 fitting, the first visit comes to $489; after that, each service is $100.
Over a year, two costs repeat. Upkeep every 2 to 4 weeks is 13 to 26 visits: $1,300 to $2,600. Most toupees start to wear after about three months, so plan on about four units a year: with the Transparent Poly Skin Men’s Toupee, that’s $956. Shipping, tax and color visits are on top; ask us what fitting a replacement unit costs.
The store sells 3 more units under the name toupee: the Men’s Lace Toupee With NPU Perimeter ($239), the Monofilament Toupee for Men ($279) and the Poly Thin Skin Men’s Toupee Hair System ($369, Remy hair).
- Salon services are paid at the salon; booking online takes no payment. There’s no subscription or contract.
- A toupee wears out, so the unit is a repeat cost too. For yearly totals, see what a hair system costs per year.

What the fitting involves
We cut and trim the toupee to the shape of your thin area, shave the area under the base and clean it, attach the toupee with tape or glue, then cut and blend it into your own hair. It’s booked as 120 minutes, and systems bought elsewhere, including online, are fitted at the same $250. The step-by-step and how to prepare are on our toupee installation page.
Wearing a toupee: attachment, upkeep and how long it lasts
Worn day and night, serviced every 2–4 weeks
A salon-fitted toupee is attached with tape or glue and worn continuously between services. Most units start to wear after about three months, and then it’s time for a new one.

- Tape or glue
- Tape tends to be quicker to take off and reapply; liquid adhesive tends to hold longer. Which suits you is settled at the fitting. More in hair system tape.
- Clips
- Clip-on pieces come off daily, and we fit those too. The pros and cons are in clip-on hair systems.
- Servicing
- A Hair System Service ($100, about an hour) takes the toupee off, shaves and cleans the area, washes and reattaches it; a haircut isn’t part of upkeep. How to tell one is due: toupee maintenance.
- Lifespan
- Most toupees start to wear after about three months with daily wear; washing, heat and sweat shorten that. See how long a toupee lasts.
Who a toupee suits, and who it doesn’t
It suits men with a defined thin area on top, hair at the sides to blend into, and time for regular appointments
What it offers
Coverage from the day it’s fitted, with no surgery and no downtime.
What it asks
A service every 2 to 4 weeks and a new unit about every three months.
It may not be the right choice, or not the first step, when
- You want no upkeep. A toupee is a standing commitment of time and money.
- Your skin reacts to adhesives. Say so at the consultation, and see a doctor about any rash or irritation: adhesive rashes are a form of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology).
- Hair is thinning rather than gone. A full men’s hairpiece may be more than you need: a crown-only or hairline-only piece is fitted at the same $250 appointment.
- Hair loss is linked to an illness or a medication. Talk to a physician about the cause first. A hairpiece can still be an option afterwards; see medical hair loss for what the salon offers.
For women, see hair toppers and women’s hair replacement. Weighing a toupee against a transplant? A toupee covers the area the day it’s fitted and needs upkeep for as long as it’s worn; a transplant is surgery, to discuss with a physician. Our non-surgical hair replacement services page compares the two.
